Finding Hope and Guidance Along the Way

For Freddie and Trish, the journey to better understand the benefits and assistance that may be available as a former uranium worker has not always been easy. Freddie worked underground at the United Nuclear Mine in Church Rock, New Mexico, from 1977 to 1983. During his years in the mine, he took on many responsibilities, including transporting uranium in ore cars, operating equipment, and running the hoist that carried miners up and down the shaft. When the mine closed, Freddie was one of the last workers to come up from underground.

“We were trying to understand what help might be available to Freddie,” Trish shared. “As his wife, I’ve been by his side through all of this, but we felt lost and didn’t know where to turn.”

After struggling to get answers, Freddie and Trish connected with our team in June 2026. That’s when they met Outreach Representative Lori, “After meeting Lori, we finally felt like someone was listening to us,” they said. “She answered our questions, explained things clearly, and helped us understand the different programs and assistance that may be available. Most importantly, she stayed in contact with us and never made us feel ignored.”

Today, Freddie and Trish feel supported and hopeful as they continue learning about the resources available to former uranium workers and their families, “Our overall experience has been wonderful,” they said. “Lori has been so kind, helpful, and patient with both of us. Honestly, she came into our lives at a time when we really needed help.”

When asked if they would recommend PCM to others, their answer was simple: “Absolutely. PCM helped us move forward when we felt stuck and showed us that we’re not alone in this process.”
